Cleo Ann (Piper) Boger - 9611/11/1920 - 5/5/2017
Cleo Ann (Piper) Boger died peacefully early Christmas 2016 morning. She was 96 and preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Robert Boger ('02), and 2 brothers, Robert Piper ('12) and Jerry Piper ('15). She is survived by 3 children, Dr. Stephen P. Boger (Joan) of Hayward, WI/Naples, FL, Paul Boger (Barb) of Cokato, MN and Lizabeth Boger (Eric Nilsson) of Falcon Heights, MN; also by 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Daughter of Helen and Leo Piper, Cleo was born and raised in Byron, IL, where her ancestors had settled in the 1830s. An alumna (B.A., English) of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority and remained active for life among UW and KD alumni. When Bob Boger (a fellow "Badger") was discharged from the army, the couple moved first to Madison, WI and later to Byron, where Bob joined his father-in-law's hardware store business. In 1961, Cleo began teaching PE in Byron area schools. She later obtained a degree in library science and long-served as the librarian at Byron High School. In the course of her tenure in that role, Cleo, deeply influenced the lives of countless students, many of whom to this day give testament to her love and critical guidance. Highly active in the social and civic life of Byron, Cleo and Bob were much loved and exemplary members of the community. Among her many other contributions, Cleo devoted much time and energy to Girl Scouting. In retirement, Cleo and Bob loved spending summers with family at Cha-ro-ke and Windsong, the Boger Family cabins in northwest WI; during winters in Bradenton, FL, Bob and Cleo reveled in hosting family visitors from the cold north and socializing with friends, old and new. They loved to travel and took many family road trips and in retirement, trips abroad. For the last 4 years, Cleo resided at Lyngblomsten Care Center in St. Paul, MN, where she maintained her good cheer, curiosity about the world, and love for books. She was interested in the lives of her many fine caregivers. The family expresses special thanks to those caregivers, who did so much to make Cleo's last years comfortable and gratifying.
