Gerard Cline Lammers was born on April 8, 1923 at the hospital in Mitchell, SD and lived in Wessington Springs, SD until moving to Madison SD in 1932. He was valedictorian of his High School class there and was also Magma Cum Laude in Chemical Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Tech. Upon Graduation he served in the Army in 1946 and went on to MIT on the GI Bill for his Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering.
Upon graduation, he worked for Kodak in Rochester, NY and a consulting engineers firm in Pittsburgh, PA where he met Anne Costa. They were married on Oct 7, 1950. Later, they moved to Colorado where he worked for another consulting firm and lived in the Wheatridge and Lakewood areas while having three children: Cynthia, Bryan, and Valerie who survive him. Anne passed away in 2014.
Gerard often contributed to the Denver Post editorial page while living there and when Standard Oil of Indiana offered him a job in Whiting, IN, he was also offered the Editor position at the newspaper. They elected to move to Lansing, IL, then Munster, IN, then Oswego, IL while he did research for what became Amoco Chemicals in Naperville, IL where he finished his career. His contributions for Amoco included the process for making the chemical that allows shirts to be “no-iron”. More than half such facilities in the world use his process. Later he worked on environmental projects, including some post career work for Argonne Labs and Waste Management. He holds several patents.
Gerard continued to write editorials and articles throughout his life, with the last being published the day before his death on August 7, 2017. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and after moving to the Lost Lake area of Dixon, IL in 2000, he attended the Lighthouse Methodist Church in Daysville, IL where services will be held on Saturday, August 12 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:00 noon until 1:00 PM at the church. Burial will be at the Lighthouse Cemetery.
