Ilene L. Mailand, 90, former longtime Egan resident, died Friday November 11, 2016 in Freeport Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Born May 30, 1926 in Freeport, the daughter of Isaac and Fannie (Meiborg) Buskohl. Married to John W. Mailand, Jr. November 1, 1944 in Stephenson County; he died November 19, 2002. Ilene was formerly employed at Kable Printing in Mt. Morris and was a member of The Byron American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and especially cooking and baking. Survived by her son, Earle Mailand of Byron; daughters: Deloris (Kenneth) VanBuskirk of Grand Detour, Nola (Larry) Johnson of Coldwater, Mich., Carol Nicodemus of Freeport, and Linda (Leonard) Pinter of Freeport; daughter-in-law, Jane Mailand of Coldwater, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren; and brothers, Clarence Buskohl of Byron and Donald Buskohl of New Braunsfel, TX. Also predeceased by her parents, son Roger Mailand, grandson Andrew Scott, granddaughter, Lisa Dawn, son-in-law Walter Nicodemus, daughter-in-law Ella Mailand, brothers Alvin Buskohl and Robert Gann and sister, Evelyn Zumdahl. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Thursday November 17 in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Byron with Pastor Joshua Kuck of Main Street Church of Chelsea, Mich. officiating. Burial in Adeline Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday 6:00 – 8:00pm in the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Wilma Mae Buse - 925/2/1924 - 11/5/2016
Oregon – Wilma Mae Buse, age 92, died Sat., Nov. 5, 2016 at the Oregon Living and Rehabilitation Center. She was born May 2, 1924 in Doolittle Mills, Indiana the daughter of Russell and Gladys (Lamon) Lynch. She graduated from Oil Twp. High School in Saint Croix, Indiana and than from Sauk Valley College Nursing School. She formerly worked at the Oregon Sewing Factory and than for the Neighbor’s Nursing Home in Byron. Wilma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oregon. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Arnold, granddaughter Judy Eichman, Brother Victor Lynch, and 2 sisters; Norma Walker and Marjorie Underhill. She is survived by her daughter Lois Eichman of Alamo, TX, and son Don (Pam) Buse of Mt. Morris, 2 brothers Harold Lynch of St. Croix, IN, and Joseph Lynch of Taswell, IN, Sister Shirley Mitchell of Eckerty, IN, 4 grandsons; Jason (Angela) Eichman, Dustin (Samantha) Buse, Devon Buse, and Cody Buse, 4 Great Grandchildren: T.J., Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Kenzie Mae. Funeral service will be 1:00 pm, Wed., Nov. 9, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Oregon with the Pastor Jack Briggs officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church from Noon till 1:00 pm. Burial will be at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon. A memorial fund is established for the First Presbyterian Church of Oregon.
Betty L. Nyberg - 923/18/1924 - 11/5/2016
Betty Lorraine Nyberg, of Freeport and Byron, IL went home to be with the Lord on November 5, 2016, at age 92. She was born Betty Compton on March 18, 1924, the daughter of Cliff and Charlotte (Miller) Compton, in Moose Lake, Minnesota. She is survived by her son, Russell (Sandra) Nyberg of Pennsylvania and daughter Laurie (Nyberg) Greenwell of Arizona and sisters Jane Prenot and Meryl Nelson and brothers Dick Compton and Caleb Compton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Nyberg and her daughter, Chrys Seaton and brother Cliff and sisters Janet and Myrna. She leaves behind several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Betty spent the last years of her life studying God’s word and praying for others. She had a weekly Bible study in her home up until she was 92. Over the years, she made many quilts, especially baby quilts to give to new babies in the family. Her more adventuresome interest was riding motorcycles with her husband Len.
Both visitation and funeral services will be held at Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home, 506 West Merchant St. in Byron on Thursday November 10, 2016. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the service to immediately follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Gary Cortese officiating. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. Memorials are established for Hospice or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Evalene V. Palmer - 1036/6/1913 - 11/2/2016
Byron – Evalene Viola Palmer, age 103 died Wed., Nov. 2, 2016 at Rockford Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 6, 1913 in Erie, IL the daughter of Harold and Annie (Miller) Matthews. She married Hank A. Palmer on Mar. 23, 1931 in Mt. Morris, Il , Hank preceded her in death in 1957. Evalene formerly worked at the Indian Village Restaurant, Kysor of Byron and cleaned houses in Oregon. She loved to crochet, garden, fish with family, loved her animals, and go to the casino. She was known by her family to always be making donuts and sweet rolls on Sunday afternoons for them. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Hank, 2 daughters; Darlene Holeton and Lois Himes, son Henry “Dick” Palmer, 3 sisters; Beulah Sullivan, Hazel Jones, and Elsie Fluck, 1 grandson Michael Holeton, 2 great grandsons Shannon and Robby Palmer, 1 great great granddaughter Gabrielle Holeton, she is survived by her daughter Dixie Dzielak of Byron, son Robert (Janet) Palmer of Grand Haven, MI, daughter-in-law Shirley Palmer of Leaf River, IL, 14 grandchildren, and many Great and Great Great Grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Monday, Nov. 7, 2016 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant Street in Byron, IL with the Pastor Randy Snider of the Cornerstone Family Church of Byron officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Silver Creek Cemetery south of Leaf River. A memorial fund is established in Evalene’s name.

Stillman Valley, IL – Loving Father and Grandfather, Robert R. Thingvold, age 76, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016 at Alden-Park Strathmoor in Rockford. He was born Dec. 22, 1939 in Black River Falls, Wisconsin the son of Elmer E. and Hazel M. (Clason) Thingvold. Robert graduated from East High School and attended Rock Valley College. He worked over 40 years as an inspector at Sundstrand in Rockford in the Aviation Dept. He married Doris Higdon on Feb. 27, 1960 in Rockford. She preceded him on Aug. 21, 1997. He was also predeceased by his parents, 1 sister, and 4 brothers. He is survived by his children; Glenda McCarthy of Loves Park, Wanda Bush of Byron, Carla “Jeannie”( Keenan) Wolfe of Byron, Brian (Allen Hollin) Thingvold, and Jessica (Sam Lachowicz) Woollcombe of Rockford, a stepdaughter Boramay Raz of Rockford, brother Buford Thingvold of Milwaukee, 5 grandchildren; Christopher Weaver, Jeffrey Weaver, Shawn Weaver, Adam Bush, and Leah Bush. Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Wed., Nov. 2, 2016 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 136 W. Judith A. “Judy” Morrison, 72, of Byron died Wednesday Oct. 26, 2016 at her home. She was born June 29, 1944 in Rockford, IL the daughter of Henry & Irene (Asp) Fajen. She married Richard Morrison in Shirland, IL on April 29, 1978. Judy was employed at various companies that included Shumway Seed Co. in Rockford, Barber Coleman in Rockford, Kable Printing in Mt. Morris, and the Byron Nuclear Plant. She was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout Den leader and was a former member of the Winnebago County Homemaker’s Association. She enjoyed boating, reading, and doing craft projects with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; daughters, Terri Benton of Champaign, IL and Chris Bodoh of Lakewood, WI; sons, Donald Ware, Jr. of Aurora, IL, Tony Ware of Byron, and Scott (Jennifer) Ware of Durand, IL; 16 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and brother, Mike Fajen. She was preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law, Stephanie Morrison and son-in-law, David Benton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday Oct. 29, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Byron with Father Howard Barch officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from Noon-2:00 PM. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery.
Neil E. Holland - 8512/18/1930 - 10/25/2016
Neil E. Holland, 85, longtime Oregon resident, died Tuesday October 25, 2016 in Serenity Hospice Home, Oregon- reuniting with Barbie, his wife of 60 years. Born December 18, 1930 in Prophetstown the son of Chester and Mildred (Dorathy) Holland. He was a 1948 graduate of Erie High School and a 1950 graduate of Worsham School of Mortuary Science.
Neil was a US Army veteran 1951- 1953, serving in the Korean War. Married to Barbara Lynn Manning January 31, 1954 in Lyndon; she died September 5, 2014. Neil and his family moved to Oregon in 1967 when he began working at Farrell Funeral Home where he eventually assumed ownership, retiring from Farrell-Holland Funeral Home in 1997. He also owned and operated Farrell-Holland Funeral Homes in Stillman Valley and Byron. Following his retirement, he and his wife Barb enjoyed their years together traveling in this country and abroad but never staying too long away from Oregon and family. Neil was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan, listening on the radio, watching on television and attending many games at Busch Stadium. He was a member of Oregon United Methodist Church, Oregon VFW Post 8739, Oregon Masonic Lodge #420, Ogle County Shrine and Tebela Shrine. Neil served on the boards of KSB Hospital, Rochelle Savings and Loan, Rock River Center and the Oregon School District. In 1990 his service to the community was recognized when he was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Oregon Chamber of Commerce and again this year when the city of Oregon named a street in his honor. Neil’s church, his faith and his family were by far the most important parts of his life. Survived by his children: Larry (Susana Guzman-Holland) Holland, LuAnne (Craig) Cann and Lisa (Tom) Gale, all of Oregon; grandchildren: Kellen (Kristi) Cann, Brooks (Sarah) Cann, Griffin Cann, Logan (Erica Arends) Cann, Jon (Paige) Holland, Katie (Jeremiah) McCarthy, Morgan Gale, Ethan (Jordan) Gale and Chloe Gale; great grandchildren: Cambria and Gunnar Cann, Finley Cann, Lydia and Violet McCarthy and Caster Holland; brother, Rodney Holland of Kewanee; sisters-in-law, Darlene Holland and Mary Stern; step grandson, Jim (Jackie) Mzhickteno; and step great grandsons, Max Mzhickteno and Kaenyn Walker. Also predeceased by his parents, brother Dale, sister Joan Hawk, daughter-in-law Marjorie, and step grandson, Mel Hicks. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am Monday October 31 in Oregon United Methodist Church with Rev Thomas E. Kim, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation 2:00-6:00pm Sunday in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon with a Masonic Service at 6:00pm . Jerry “Jerome” Michalak, Sr., age 79, of Byron passed away on Monday, October 24, 2016 at Serenity Hospice Home in Oregon, IL. Jerry was born on February 6, 1937 in LaSalle, IL the son of Vince and Josephine Michalak. He worked for many years as a heavy equipment mechanic for Patten Ind. Jerry married Patricia Kierski on October 6, 1962. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Byron. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed going on fishing trips up north and sitting in his garage having a cold beer. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Patricia of Byron; children, Jerry “Jerome” Jr. (Sherri) Michalak of Freeport, Kathy (Gary Oltmanns) Bradbury-Michalak of Oregon, Debbie (Tommy) Crawford of Friendship, TN, Matthew (Michelle Weems) Michalak of Byron, and Mark Michalak of Forreston; siblings, Vincent Michalak of Sebring, FL and Doris Markley of Clearwater, FL, grandchildren, Michelle “Mickey”, Jay, Tina, Anthony, Cody, Chrissy, Taylor, Trisha, Miranda, and Franklyn; great grandchildren, Breanna, Hayley, and Kylie; and special dog Tasha. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Tom and Don. Christian funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday October 28, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Byron with Father Howard Barch officiating. David W. Churney - 669/20/1950 - 10/21/2016
David W. Churney, 66, of Oregon, Ill., formerly of Streator,IL died Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at home. Dave was born Sept. 20, 1950 in Streator to Frederick Sr. and Joan (Spraggon) Churney. He graduated from St. Stephen School and Woodland High School, where he played football. He also attended Illinois Valley Community College and Southern Illinois University. Dave was in the Army from 1971 to 1973, serving in South Korea. He married Karen Funk in 1990 and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2016.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter Danielle (Troy) Kedroske; a stepson Nick (Jamie)Sutherland; grandchildren Ben Kedroske and Boston, Baylor and Adler Sutherland; a sister, Mary Kay Cavanaugh (Bill Wissen); a brother Dan (Sheryl) Churney; sister-in-law Gena Churney; and a granddaughter to be born in December. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rick and brother-in-law Jack Cavanaugh. Besides family, Dave enjoyed his backyard fish pond, Nascar, the Chicago Bears, gardening and deep sea fishing. He joked that after retirement he wanted to live on the beach in Key West. Dave was always looking for laughs and will be missed.
Visitation will be 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Farrell-Holland & Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th St., in Oregon, IL with service at 5:30 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded. Memorials can be directed to Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon or Home of Hope in Sterling.

On Wednesday October 19th, 2016, our sweet angel, Amos Patrick Meyer, 3 years old, passed away peacefully. He was born September 16th, 2013 in Byron, IL to the parents Duane C. Meyer and Maggie (Rosko) Meyer. Amos was so full of life and love for everything and everyone. He was such a talker. Everything he said and did was with such joy and enthusiasm. He loved animals, Mr. Bailey, Charlie, his bunny(fire truck) and his fish (nose). But his favorite things were Paw Patrol and John Deere tractors! He was our “Little Farm Hand". Amos was a new student at Byron Forest Preserve and had recently received the honor of being student of the week.
Survivors include his father, Duane C. Meyer and Catherine Mearns and son Asher of Stillman Valley; paternal grandparents, Duane L. (papa) & Carolyn J. (Meemaw) Meyer also of Stillman Valley; Uncle Brent (Ashley) Meyer of Oregon; cousins, Preston LaBay, Greyson and Emmy Meyer of Oregon; paternal great-grandparents Richard (Jane) Meyer of Chana, IL and Robert L. Wright of Clinton, Iowa; maternal grandparents, Don (Luann) Rosko of Mt Morris, IL; Uncle Mark (Aimee) Rosko of Byron, IL; cousins Josephine and Eddie Rosko of Byron, IL; and many more Aunts, Uncles, cousins and friends.
