BYRON – Bertha White, 90, of Byron, died Tuesday March 9, 2010 in Pinecrest Manor, Mt. Morris. Born October 13, 1919 in German Valley, the daughter of Weert and Mary (Kaltenbach) Asche. Married to Chester White January 19, 1952; he died August 26, 1996. She had been employed at National Lock of Rockford. Bertha was an active member of Seward Congregational Church and its Women’s Fellowship and also worked there cleaning. She enjoyed playing cards and the piano, reading, cooking and embroidery. Survived by her daughter, Rosemary Weems of Mt. Morris; grandchildren: Michelle Weems and Christina Weems both of Byron, Jeffrey Weems of Davis Junction, Ashley James of Kings, Angela (Sean) Barry of Arlington Heights, Megan (Mark) Tanner of Geneva, Janie (Steve) Boyer and Tim Engel both of Elgin; 7 great grandchildren; and brothers: Melvin (Rose) Asche of Leaf River and Wayne (Joan) Asche of Winnebago. Also predeceased by her parents;, daughter, Sally Boyle; sisters: Irene Munk and Velma Wagner; and brothers: Walter, Ray and Laverne Asche. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday March 12 in Seward Congregational Church with Pastor Ron Farb officiating. Burial in Byron Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 6-8pm in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Byron. A memorial fund has been established.

John "Jack" Robert Manning

Rockford — John “Jack” Robert Manning, 79, of Rockford died Friday March 5, 2010 at Alden-Alma Nelson Manor. He was born November 24, 1930 in Eau Clare, WI to Neil S. and Laura (Anger) Manning. He lived in the Rockford and Holcomb area for the majority of his life. Jack served in the US Air Force from 1950 through 1954 serving in the Korean War. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and thoroughly enjoyed to read. He is survived by his brothers Neil Manning of Milwaukee, WI, Gary Manning of Ft. Myers, FL, Jim (Joyce) Manning of Rochelle, and Dale Manning of Jacksonville, Fl; brother-in-law Marshall Jolly of Joliet, IL and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and sister Mary Manning-Jolly. The funeral service will be held Wednesday March 10, 2010 at 10:00 am at the Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home, 136 W. Roosevelt, Stillman Valley, with Rev. Brett Todd of the United Methodist Church in Rochelle officiating. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service from 9-10am. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his name.

John H. Baumgartner, 88, of Byron died Wednesday March 3, 2010 in Belvidere, IL. He was born May 12, 1921 in Zulb, Czeck Republic the son of Karl & Catherine Wasserbauer Baumgartner. He married Hedwig “Hedy” Frick in Germany on Sept. 1, 1950. John retired in 1988 from Electri-Flex in Roselle, IL. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, enjoyed watching nature, and had a great sense of humor. He is survived by his wife, Hedy; sons, Peter (Shery) Baumgartner of Belvidere and Rainer “R.J.” (Trisha) Baumgartner of Farmington Hills, MI; and grandchildren, Sara, Lynn, Katie, Erin, & Jesse. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Ingrid, 3 sisters, and 2 brothers. Christian funeral mass will be held Tuesday March 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Byron with Father Sylvester Nnaso celebrating. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00-8:00 PM in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant, Byron. Private burial will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine. Byron – Russell H. Ekstrom, age 91, passed away Tue. , March 2, 2010 at Neighbor’s Rehab Care Center in Byron. He was born April 9, 1918 in Rockford the son to Henning and Maria (Larson) Ekstrom. Russell was employed by Greenlee Brothers for 10 years and for 40 years with Ekstrom-Carlson Co. in Rockford as a precession machinist. He retired in 1983. He was a member of the All Saints Lutheran Church in Byron, the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge and life time member of the Svithoid Club in Rockford. He resided in Byron on the Rock River for 63 years. Russell was preceded in death by his loving wife Arlene, parents, 3 brothers; Laurence, Robert, and Richard, and 3 sisters; Martha, Sylvia, and Mary Jane. Survived by his son Randall Ekstrom of Carbondale, IL. daughter Diane (Keith) Seibert of Tampa, FL, 2 step-children; Karin (Greg) Haney and Kathleen (Jack) Hildebrand all of Memphis, TN, 7 grandchildren; Jody Brown, Leah Ekstrom, Andrew Haney, Matthew Haney, Rachel Hildebrand, Marc Mera, and Karyn Roeling, 5 great Grandchildren, and Many beautiful nieces , nephews, and great-nieces and nephews who also claim him as Grandpa. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Friday, Mar. 5, 2010 at the All Saints Lutheran Church in Byron with the Rev. Scott Schmidt pastor officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the church. A memorial fund is established for the All Saints Lutheran Church.

Oregon – Bernard E. “Ben” Speck, 80, of Oregon and formerly of Glen Ellyn, died Sunday February 28, 2010 in the Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home in Oregon. He was born June 12, 1929 in Chicago, the son of Walter and Stella (Gleba) Speck. He married Joan Binger on September 18, 1954 in Glen Ellyn, IL. He was a veteran of the US Army , serving with occupation forces in Japan following World War 2. He was employed as a photoengraver for the Chicago Tribune for 41 years. He was a member of the International Photoengravers Union of North America, Chicago Photoengravers Union #5, and the American Legion of Glen Ellyn. He enjoyed woodworking and believed that his family was the most important thing in his life. He is survived by his wife Joan of Oregon; sons Eric (Barbara) Speck of Viroqua, WI, and Robert (Diana) of Oregon; daughter, Mary (Cliff) Jensen of Highlands Ranch, CO; and grandchildren Camilla Speck, Benjamin Speck, Matthew Speck, Kathryn Speck, Grace Jensen and Connor Jensen. He was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. Services will be held at 8:00pm Wednesday March 3 in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon preceded by visitation from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Pastor Michael Hoffman of Oregon Church of God will officiate. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to the Oregon Fire Department.

Elmer E. Thurm, 100, of Dixon died Saturday, February 27, 2010 in KSB Hospital. He was born December 31, 1909 in Lee County, IL the son of Edwin and Edna (Carlson) Thurm. He married Marie E. Wilke on July 17, 1928 in Dixon; she died on May 9, 2004. He farmed in the Ogle County area for many years, owned and operated Tradewinds in Oregon, drove semi truck, and worked at the Oregon piano factory. He was a member of the Masonic Oregon Lodge #420, enjoyed singing karaoke, and traveling in his motor home. He is survived by his son Robert (Violet) Thurm of MO; Daughters Lois (Howard) Walters of TN, Jane Freeman of Oregon, and Patricia (Frank) Mann of GA; sister Gladys Spickler of WI; 15 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and many, many great great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Mildred Spickler, Adeana Little, and Dolly Abley, grandson Daniel Freeman and grandson-in-law David Oltmans. Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Ebenezer Reformed Church, rural Oregon, with pastor Brion Brooks officiating. Dixon, Illinois – Lillian (Leokadia) H. Cachel, age 85, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. She was born Dec. 7, 1924 in Chicago the daughter to Jan and Helena Piotrowski. She attended Gunsaulus Grammar School and Kelly High School in Chicago. She married Henry Cachel on Sept. 6, 1948 in Chicago. Lillian was active in the Civil War Round Table in Dixon, the American Rosie The Riveters Association, and the Human Origins Initiative of Rutgers University. She was predeceased by her husband Henry on Mar. 16, 2009, her parents, and 4 brothers and 1 sister. She is survived by her 3 children: Susan Cachel of New Brunswick, NJ, Henry E. Cachel of Chicago, and John (Pamela) Cachel of Niles, IL, 2 grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Cachel, special friend John Di Guida of Chicago, many nieces and nephews, and was Godmother to Brother Austin Thomas Mysliwiec from the Order of Franciscan Monks of the Assumption Monastery in Pulaski, Wisconsin. Egan - Lawrence Edward Danner, 77 of Egan died Wednesday Feb. 24, 2010 in Neighbors Nursing Home in Byron. He was born December 4, 1932 in Harvard the son of George and Gwendolyn (Parker) Danner. He married Betty Jo Frauen on April 12, 1958 in Des Moines, IA. Lawrence worked as a truck driver for Action Moving and Storage in Rockford and retired from Ruan Trucking in Des Moines. He was a member of Teamster’s Retirement Club of Rockford and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and antique tractors. He is survived by his wife Betty Jo; sons Timothy of Egan and Edward (Yon Sil) and granddaughter Sara of Payallup, WA; Sisters, Denise (Roger) Welte of Greer, SC, Barbara (Charles) Clark of Lee Summit, MO, and Jerilyn Danner of Greenville, SC; and brother in law, Vern Welte of Sterling. He is predeceased by his parents, infant son George Joseph and sister Charlene Welte. Survived by his wife Brenda of Rochelle; son Michael at home; step-daughters, Tabitha (Lucas) Burtman of Davis Junction and Melissa Portner of Dixon; grandchildren: Mario Montes, Alexandria Ethridge, Mia Pendleton and Anthony Fenton; brothers, Robert Gigous and Jesse (Carolyn) Gigous, both of Oregon and Roy (Marge) Gigous of Tomah, Wis.; and sisters, Sandra Krueger of Oregon and Judy Fore of Ashton. Charlotte Mae Krueger, 75, of Chana, died Thursday Feb. 18, 2010 in Swedish-American Hospital, Rockford. She was born Sept. 1, 1934 in Amboy, IL the daughter of Benjamin & Emma Holden Smith. She married Walter Krueger, Jr. in Oregon on Sept. 18, 1953; he died in 2003. Charlotte retired from Quebecor Printing in Mt. Morris, enjoyed the Chana Sale Barn, First Friday music, tending her flower beds, and volunteering and attending activities at Ogle County Senior Services. The grandchildren and great grandchildren were most important to her. Survivors include daughters, Pam (Robert) Furman of Ashton, & Terri (Kurt) Butler of Rockford; sons, Ben (Marge) of Oregon, Richard (Penny) of Chana, and John (Theresa) of Oregon; grandchildren, Wes, Tim, Lucas, Brad, Caleb, Eliot, Marcia, Kim, Rhea, Reghan, Trisha, Alison, & Emma; 18 great grandchildren; brothers, Delano (Pat) Smith of Leaf River, Warren (Maggie) Smith of Byron, and Edwin ( Edna) Smith of Oregon; and her dog, Jake. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and 3 brothers. Holcomb – Leslie F. Poliska, age 90, died Thur., Feb. 18, 2010 at the Rochelle Rehab and Healthcare Center. He was born Aug. 4, 1919 in Lindenwood the son to Frank and Edith (Pepper) Poliska. Les attended Monroe Center and Holcomb Schools. He married Rhoda Wills on April 5, 1941 in Holcomb. He was a lifelong Holcomb and Lindenwood area resident where he farmed all his life. He was a member of the Holcomb Presbyterian Church and then the Elim Reformed Church. Les served on the Holcomb School Board for over 20 years and also on the Holcomb Fire Dept. for 39 years. He was predeceased by his parents. Survived by his wife Rhoda of Rochelle, Daughter Eileen Strohman of Rochelle, son Gary (Ronda) Poliska of Chana, 5 grandchildren; Heath (Kelly) Strohman, Michelle (Jay) Knight, Zach (Mandy) Poliska, Jana (Scott) Knupp, and Bryn Poliska, 6 Great Grandchildren; Jordyn, Amber, Kaleb, MaKenna, Kaden, and Kollin. BYRON – Emory A. Weems, longtime Byron resident, died Monday, February 15, 2010 in Swedish-American Hospital, Rockford. Born June 22, 1954 in Woodstock, the son of Robert and Ancie Workinger Weems. Emory was a 1972 graduate of Byron High School and a US Army veteran. He had been employed nearly 15 years at Ablaze Welding & Fabricating in Rockford. Emory enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR racing. Survived by: son, Theodore Weems of Byron; daughters, Amanda Rothermel of Byron and Hannah Weems of Rockford; mother, Ancie Weems of Byron; grandchildren, Madison Rothermel and Nicolas Delgado; brother, Glenn (Judy) Weems of Baileyville; and sister-in-law, Cheryl Batten of Sterling. Byron- James “Jim” E. Wilson, 69, of Byron died Saturday February 13, 2010 in Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home, Oregon. Born February 15, 1940 in Byron the son of Kenneth and Agnes Mary (Gill) Wilson. He was a graduate of Byron High School, class of 1958. He was a self employed brick layer who owned James E. Wilson Mason Contracting for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Brick Layers Union Local #31 since 1959. He was also a member of Byron Lions Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award for over 40 years of membership. Jim will always be remembered for his craftsmanship and detail on his hundreds of commercial and residential projects specializing in custom fireplaces. He also had a keen interest in Byron and Ogle County history and shared his knowledge with other historians. He was an avid euchre player and spent many hours relaxing after a hard day of work with his euchre buddies. He married Nancy L. (Butt) Hughes who preceded him in death in 1977, leaving four children Cheryl (Chuck) Gobble of Arizona, Don (Diane) Hughes of Leaf River, Pamela Wilson of Byron and Nanette (John) Gibson of Byron. He is also survived by his wife Mary (Kelly) Wilson of thirty years; whom he married on October 12, 1979 and stepchildren Christine (Jim) Fortune of Colorado and Steve (Anita) Bartscher of Byron. 17 grandchildren Chase and Cal Gobble, Megan (Kevin) Sandall, Sarah Smiley, Brandon and Devyn Wilson, Keith, Casey and Emily Gibson, Ron, Nate and Jennifer Demus, Michael Heller, Ryan and Issabelle Bartscher, and Matt and Melissa Flowers and three great granddaughters Rylee, Maddie and Paisley. He is also survived by brothers Kenny (Wynette) Wilson and Tom (Bernie) Wilson and sisters Sue (Lloyd) Schumacher, Kay Hopkins, Pat (Del) Smith, Nancy (Bill) Buck, Barbara Spry, Sarah Brinkmeier, and Janet Morrison and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill and Bob Wilson, granddaughter Kori Lynn Gibson and stepdaughter Lori Bartscher. The funeral will be held at 11:00am Thursday February 18 at the United Church in Byron with the Rev. Michael Mulberry officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8pm Wednesday February 17 at Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant St. Byron. Cremation rights will be accorded. Robert P. Buzzard

Mt. Morris -Robert Pettit (Bob) Buzzard. was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey on March 27, 1952. He died February 13, 2010 at the age of 58. Bob lived in Mt. Morris, Illinois where he was employed as a manager at Woods Equipment Company. Bob is survived by his sons Jeremy Robert Buzzard and wife Katie; Jason Lee Buzzard, wife Meghan and twin daughters Hannah and Abbey; his sister Joan B. Thurston and Charles Barnard; sister Carol Ann B. Hutchinson and her husband Tom and many nieces and nephews. Bob was a loving father, grandfather and brother. He was an expert in his field of outdoor power equipment and tools. Beginning his career working with chainsaws; he worked with his late father Herbert S. Buzzard for Stihl, Inc. He eventually owned a distributorship for Stihl.
Bob developed his love for motors at an early age. His favorite gift as a little boy was a steam engine that just sat on a table and made steam! He later graduated to go-carts, mini-bikes, then motorcycles, boats and finally cars - especially his favorite, Corvettes. He loved the mountains, the ocean and lighthouses, his vacations as a child in Cape Cod Massachusetts, and Virginia Beach where he lived happily at one point in his life. He was proud of his heritage as a member of his family, and he was dedicated to his two sons. His recent joy was in his two five year old granddaughters Hannah and Abbey, who he loved to visit when he was traveling in the South. All of his family will miss him dearly, especially his sense of humor and his presence in our lives. We love you Bob and know you’re at peace in heaven with your beloved

A Memorial Gathering will be held Thur. Feb. 18th at the Lutheran Outdoor Ministries in Oregon from 5-7 pm in the Hospitality Center and also at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington, SC. Family visitation will be at 2:00pm and immediately following the service in Lexington, SC.

He was born July 6, 1939 in Oregon the son of Harold & Edna Carr Arbogast, Sr. He married Gail Woodruff on Dec. 1, 1979 in Mt. Morris, IL. Duane served in the US Army from 1963-1969. He retired in 2001 from Quebecor World as a master operator and was a member of Local 65 B. He enjoyed farming, family, friends, and playing cards. OREGON – S. Wayne Ritter, 78, of Oregon died Sunday February 7, 2010 in McAllen, Texas after a long battle with cancer. Born December 3, 1931 in Mendota the son of Polk M. and Esther (Moir) Ritter. Married to Carole Selmer July 30, 1955 in Utica. Wayne was a US Army veteran, serving in the Korean War and was employed most of his life in the printing business. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oregon, Oregon VFW Post 8739 and the Mendota Elks Club. The most important thing in Wayne’s life was his family – he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Survived by his wife of 54 years, Carole; sons: Gary W. (Jan) Ritter of Villa Park, Timothy C. (Christine) Ritter of Anna, Joseph J. (Linda) Ritter of Grayslake and Michael A. Ritter of Oregon; daughters: Margaret A. “Peggy” (Brad) Boncosky of Crystal Lake and Mary E. “Libby” (Doug) Macomber of Carmel, IN; grandchildren: Amy Ritter, Jessica Ritter, Jonathon Ritter, Blake Ritter, Brock Ritter, Benjamin Boncosky, Lauren Boncosky, Jeffrey Ritter, Jason Ritter, Abigail Macomber and Mason Macomber;and sisters: Pearl White and Vera Godfrey. Predeceased by a brother, Sherwood Ritter and sisters, Beatrice Tuttle and Shirley Goodwin. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00am Friday February 12 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oregon, with Rev. Richard Kramer as celebrant. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Oregon with military honors. Visitation Friday February 12 from 9:00am to 10:30am in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Oregon or Comfort House Hospice, McAllen, TX.
