BYRON – Darrell R. Friday, 69, of Byron, departed his earthly life on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at KSB Hospital, Dixon, surrounded by his loving wife of 46 years and his family. Born October 30, 1944 in Rockford, the son of Harry and Eloise (Gibson) Friday. Darrell grew up in the Leaf River, Winnebago and Byron areas on the farm and graduated from Leaf River High School in 1964. Married to Janet M. Gorst August 12, 1967 in Rockford. Darrell was widely known for his work ethic; employed by Rockford Blacktop for over 35 years working as Superintendent of Asphalt Plants, then retiring in 2006 as Superintendent of Quarries and Equipment at Propheter Construction in Sterling. He had worked every aspect of heavy highway construction, building many area roads on sealcoat crews in the 60’s and 70’s to making the product in the later years. He also served as Byron Township Supervisor in the 90’s. He had a great love of the outdoors, sharing his love of dogs, hunting, shooting and gardening with his wife, kids and grandkids. He and his wife attended the Red Brick Church in Stillman Valley, sharing their love of the Lord there. Survived by his wife Janet Friday of Byron; daughters, Tammy (Mike) Homman of Leaf River and Sue (Larry) Jones of Roscoe; son, Tom (Michelle) Friday of Peoria; grandchildren, Melissa, Emily and Matt Homman of Leaf River and Connor and Brooke Jones of Roscoe; and nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, sister Marilyn and brother-in-law Loren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Monday December 2 in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Byron with Pastor Chris Brauns of The Congregational Christian Church of Stillman Valley officiating. Burial in Silver Creek Cemetery, Leaf River. Visitation Sunday 4:00-6:00pm in the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.
