Stillman Valley, IL – James Laurence Meissen, age 85, died Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Medina Nursing Center in Durand, IL. He was born Sept. 1, 1934 in Pecatonica the son of Laurence S. and Helen L. (Morgan) Meissen. Jim attended West High School in Rockford, IL. He joined ROTC. He was in ROTC 3 years before his family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Jim graduated from High School in 1953. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. He joined the Marine Corps Reserves on Feb. 15, 1953. He served until Aug. 17, 1953 when he enlisted into the United States Marine Corp to serve his country full time. Jim was honorably discharged from the Reserves as a Private. His occupational specialty was field radio operator. Jim was promoted to Corporal on Nov. 1st, 1954. Jim received his Honorable Discharge on October 13, 1955. He was awarded 5 medals. They are as follows, the National Defense Service medal, United Nations Service medal, Korean Service medal, Japanese Occupation medal and the Army PUC medal. Jim was extremely proud of this country. Jim walked all the cemeteries in the local area collecting and documenting the names and dates of men and women that served in all of the armed forces. He made sure for many years that every Veteran from every war in the area had a flag placed on their grave on Memorial Day. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Byron, the Knights of Columbus # 4739, Stillman Valley American Legion Post # 1072, Cherry Valley VFW, and Disabled Veterans of Rockford. He enjoyed attending the Meissen family reunions. He was predeceased by his parents and infant sister. He is survived by many cousins. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be from 6-7 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 136 W. Roosevelt Road in Stillman Valley, IL. A prayer service will follow at 7:00 pm. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 136 W. Roosevelt Road in Stillman Valley, IL on Tuesday, Sept. 17th, 2019 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm followed by a 7:00 pm Prayer service.
