Kathryn A. Hamas, 64, of Byron, IL, died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Swedish-American Hospital. She was born July 26, 1949, daughter of Wilbur “Mort” and Elsie (Trettin) Sympson in Rockford, IL. Kathy was a lifelong resident of Byron and graduated from Byron High School in 1967. She married Richard “Dick” Hamas on March 18, 1972. Graduated from Rockford School of Practical Nursing in the top 1% of her class. She worked in the Emergency room at Swedish American Hospital and for various doctors throughout the Rockford area. Kathy loved her community “The City of Byron.” She served as a nurse/EMT on the Volunteer Byron Ambulance team. She had been a member of the Byron Cemetery Assoc., Byron Zoning Board of Appeals, Byron Chamber of Commerce, Byron City Counsel, and on the steering committee for ByronFest for 22 years. She was the first woman Mayor for the City of Byron and served for 14 years, the longest term of any other Mayor. The City dedicated The “Kathryn Hamas Memorial Park” for all her years of service to the City of Byron. Kathy is survived by her husband Richard “Dick” Hamas; stepdaughter, Kim Keenum, stepson, Michael (Nadine) Hamas; grandchildren, Alexandra and Tyler Keenum; brother, Kenneth (Lois) Lapp; sisters, Joann (Joe) Farris, Linda Stein and Rosalie McCartney; brother-in-law, Michael (Paulette) Hamas; and sister-in-law Joni Lys. She also leaves behind several nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, mother-in-law, Elsie Hamas and father-in-law, Albert Hamas.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 21, 2014 at 11:30 AM in the United Church of Byron, 701 W. 2nd St., Byron, IL. Visitation prior to services from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Pastor Michael Mulberry will be officiating. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. Memorials to the United Church of Byron as she was a lifelong member and to the Byron Ambulance crew for all their help and dedication.
