Leaf River - Martin “Marty” Wittig, 62, July 3, 1956 - September 6, 2018. Marty was a funny, good neighbor, friend, son, brother, and uncle. He served as an uncle to many other youth in the community. Marty was known as a hardworking farmer who would also lend a hand, help educate, and share stories.
Graduated from Northern Illinois University with a business degree which he used at Watt Publishing before going into full-time farming. He was actively involved with The Field’s Art Project and Ogle County Pilots Association. Marty was also an Ogle County Farm Bureau member.
He is survived by his father, Rev. William “Bill” Wittig, Rockford; two sisters: Emma Nelson BA, MA, Orange City, FL, and Linda Wittig BS, Byron; two brothers: William BS, MSIA (Maria), West Chester, PA; Erland BS, PhD (Naomi), El Segundo, CA; nephew: Steve Wittig (JeriAnn), Collegeville, PA; nieces: Anne Wittig, San Carlos, CA; Katherine Wittig, Los Angeles, CA; and Nancy Stukenberg (girlfriend). His mother, Isabelle, predeceased him.
You are invited to come to a Memorial Service at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Forreston, Illinois at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour before the service on Saturday, September 22, 2018.
Light lunch will follow the memorial service.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 21 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in Byron at Farrell, Holland, and Gale Funeral Home.
Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Northern Illinois University’s Journalism Department or the Hunger Ministry of St. James Lutheran Church, Forreston Illinois.
