Walter G. Price - 92
5/9/2016 - 2/17/1924
Mr. Walter Glenn Price, a long time resident of Chicago, Hinsdale, Rockford, and Oregon, Illinois, died May 9, 2016 in Oregon, Illinois of heart failure. He was 92 years of age.
Walt was born on February 17, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Josiah Glenn Price and Florence Mable Winters. He spent his entire youth in the Windy City and was proud to call himself a Chicagoan. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and graduation from Parker High School in 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Marion H. Stitt, in November 1942. He then enlisted in May 1943 in the United States Army. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters until he was honorably discharged in October 1945. Although he was assigned a variety of combat missions throughout the war, one assignment would directly impact his long-term future. After landing on Omaha Beach at Normandy, France on June 7, 1944, he helped construct many bridges to expedite General Patton’s Third Army’s rapid advances across Western Europe to defeat Nazi Germany. That experience convinced Mr. Price that he wanted to become an engineer. Walt was then assigned to the Pacific Theater and became part of the enormous troop buildup for the final invasion of the Japanese mainland. Upon Japan’s surrender in 1945, Walt returned home to his wife in Chicago and they started their family. A daughter and three sons were raised in Hinsdale and Rockford, Illinois. Influenced by Chicago’s fame for architecture and engineering and his bridge building experience during World War II, Walt pursued a career in both fields. He received a formal engineering education at the Illinois Institute of Technology and worked his way up from an entry level employee as a structural engineer at the Monadnock Building in Chicago to Chief Engineer, Martin Marietta Corporation, to founding his own company, W. G. Price and Associates in Rockford, Illinois. After 41 years of marriage, Walter and Marion Price divorced in 1984. Marion Price subsequently died on July 17, 1993. On October 25, 1987, Walt married June A. Fischer, the former June A. Rahn in Oregon, Illinois, where they have happily lived ever since. Walt volunteered his services throughout his long life to a variety of worthy causes. For example, he was President of the Hinsdale Little League, active in the Cub Scouts, donated his architectural talents to the redesigning of parts of his oldest son’s fraternity house, and the design and construction of the St. Paul Lutheran Youth Retreat in Oregon, Illinois. He loved sports, played baseball in his youth, and was a very active golfer throughout his life. Mr. Price is preceded in death by all of his siblings, Arden Willis Price, Marion Jane Davis, and Evelyn Eleanore Price. In addition to his wife Mr. Price is survived by one daughter, Leslie Johnson of Naperville, IL (Ronald); three sons, Glenn Price of Fairfax, VA (Deborah); Robert Price of Rockford, IL (Katherine); Kenneth Price of Yorkville, IL (Patricia); nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 12, 2016 at 11:30 AM, with visitation preceding beginning at 10:30 AM, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 114 S. 5th St., Oregon. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oregon. The family requests that memorials be directed to Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon or St. Paul Lutheran Church, Oregon.
