James K. Kilmer, age 78, passed away on Friday June 19, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born in Rockford on May 22, 1942 the son of Harold and Ranghild (Johnson) Kilmer. He served in the United States Army and after that worked for many years as a truck driver. In his spare time, James enjoyed spending time outdoors. He loved to go on bike rides and walks and spend time cutting the grass. He was a Byron Tiger fan and liked to attend various high school sporting events. But, more than anything he loved being a grandfather and father. He is survived by his children, Rachel Kilmer of Winnebago and Jeff Kilmer of Byron; brother, Roger (Joyce) Kilmer of Byron; grandchildren, Hannah, Audrey, Natalie, and Jacob; life long friend, Bob Heidenreich; Aunt, Alice Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Richard and Billy, and special aunt Anna Johnson. Memorials are established in his name. In accordance with covid-19 restrictions, he will be laid to rest in a private graveside service at Byron Cemetery.
