Kay L. Smith, 76, went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 16, 2025 after several years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. Kay passed in the comfort of her home in Oregon, Il with her daughter, son, sister, granddaughter, grandsons, and son-in-law by her side.
Kay was born on January 28, 1948, to Walter and Helen, the youngest of three daughters. At age 12, Kay met the love of her life, Martin Smith, whom she married after they graduated from Sunnyslope High School. In high school she excelled as a swimmer, cheerleader, and played basketball. After Martin returned from Vietnam, they built a beautiful family and life until his sudden passing of strep throat which attacked his heart muscle in 2010. She also went on to get her education as a beautician in the 80’s and real estate agent in Phoenix, AZ in the 90’s.
Kay is survived by her children, Jeffrey Smith (the late Debbie) and Monica Peeling (Walt). Kay also leaves behind her sister, BeaAnn Kelly (Jim), grandchildren Raleigh Chavez (Trevor), Ethan Peeling, Elliot Peeling, Kristen Wilson (Shawn), Ryan Peeling, Martin “Stoney” Smith, Sandra (Greg), Sabrina, Shelly, Haley; and nine great-grandchildren. Kay was very close and shared a special bond with her nephews and nieces Ben Pena (Cecilia), Angela Toups (Larry), Donna Billings (Don) and Michael Rader (Laura) and many more family members. She is predeceased by her parents, husband Martin, sister Michele “Micki” Rader (the late Steve), and daughter-in-law Debbie.
Kay had a gift for gab, silliness and laughter, and for seeing the best in everyone. She loved riding motorcycles, Jeeping, boating, getting pedicures and massages. She is fondly remembered for her kindness, smile and laughter by family and her many friends.
Kay will be placed at the VA Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona in the mausoleum with Martin. Specific details on the date and time will be shared once arrangements have been finalized. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made in Kay’s name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Wounded Warriors, Alzheimer’s Association, and/or your local Hospice.
