Neil L. Brown

July 23, 1935 — August 26, 2024

Byron

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Neil L. Brown Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend, and esteemed engineer. Neil passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on August 26, 2024. Neil was a man of great intellect, unwavering dedication, and boundless love for his family.

Born on July 23, 1935, in Walnut, Illinois, Neil discovered a passion for mathematics and design at a young age. He graduated from Newman High School in 1952 and pursued a degree in engineering, earning his Bachelor’s degree with honors and later obtaining a Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. Neil then embarked on a remarkable 40-year career, contributing to numerous significant projects that enhanced and protected the lives of many. His innovative spirit and commitment to excellence earned him respect among his peers and admiration from those he mentored.

Neil was a devoted husband to his wife, Janet. Together, they raised eight wonderful children: Bernadette, Mary Kay, Christopher, Ames, Scott, Neil, James, and Joshua, and also fostered many more. Neil took immense pride in their achievements and was a constant source of encouragement and support. His love for his children was matched only by his dedication to his thirteen grandchildren: Katie, Corey, Tristen, Catherine, Kelli, Ebony, Stephen, Dillon, Brittany, Aerin, Alex, Noah, and Neveah. He cherished every moment spent with them, often sharing his life philosophy and lessons through countless stories.

Neil was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and generous spirit. He had a natural talent for problem-solving, whether fixing a broken appliance or offering sage advice to a family member in need. His passion for learning never waned; he often spent evenings engrossed in books on history, science, and technology.

An avid outdoorsman, Neil found joy in taking walks through nature and spending quiet moments contemplating life. He was also an active member of his community, volunteering as a lector at St. Mary’s in Byron, with the Knights of Columbus, and with the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He was actively involved in his sons’ lives, serving as a leader in their local Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops.

Neil is survived by his wife Janet, sister Dorothy (Dotty) Brown, brother Gary Brown, his eight children, thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of curiosity, integrity, and love. He leaves behind a profound impact on his family and community, one that will be cherished for generations to come.  Neil was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings Shirley Williams, Mark Brown, and Mary Ann Myatt.

A Christian Funeral Mass celebrating Neil’s life will be held on August 30th, 2024 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Byron. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 – 10:45 AM. Rosary will be lead by the Knighs of Columbus at 8:30 AM prior visitation starting. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Rest in peace, Neil. Your contributions to both your family and the field of engineering will never be forgotten.
